One of America’s most widely recognized photographers, Dan Dry, has joined Power Creative as Senior Vice President and Chief Visual Officer. Dry has been honored with more than 400 national and international photography and design awards, and was named the National Newspaper Photographer by the National Press Photographers Association in 1981. While still in high school, he was part of a team that finished as runner-up to The New York Times for the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. The work was done for The Athens Messenger, a rural Ohio newspaper located in his hometown with a circulation of 12,000.
“Although I was working in Chicago for eight years, Louisville has always been the place I considered to be home,” said Dry. “My family and so many friends are here, and Power Creative is a premier agency with a great roster of clients. I’m looking forward to being a part of this very talented group of people.”
Dry was a member of The Courier-Journal’s Pulitzer-winning photography staff for five years, and traveled the globe for National Geographic for eight years, shooting for both the magazine as well as other NGS publications.
“Dan’s amazing work and his incredible reputation speak volumes. He brings a skill set to us that very few people possess,” said David Power, president and CEO of Power Creative. “We’ll benefit from his perspective and experience, and know he will make unique and valuable contributions to our entire book of business.
“We’ve built a large photography business by any standards, with four exceptional photographers in one of the largest studio spaces in the region,” added Power. “Dan’s leadership will be a tremendous asset to our work. Not only is he a consummate professional, he also has a great personal manner. He’ll fit in really well with our team.”
While in Chicago, Dry was under contract with the University of Chicago’s Office of Strategic Communications as a member of their creative team. He also operated his own business, specializing in corporate, advertising and food photography. He is the sole author of 23 coffee table books and has contributed photography to more than 100 additional books, including “America 24/7” and “A Day in the Life of America,” the only book of photography ever to top The New York Times bestseller list.
Dry has long been the Official Photographer for Churchill Downs, Inc.’s Kentucky Derby coverage and is Director of Photography for the Breeders’ Cup and will continue to fill both roles.
