Is the end of Autodesk Maya near?

I can remember when I finally got permission at school to use Alias Studio on one of only two SGI Octane machines.  At the time, you had to get special permission just to be able to use them because they were so expensive.  The reputation of the software and the high quality of output for movies like Jurassic Park were pretty exciting to me, so I pushed to learn it.  About a year later, Studio became Maya and was released for Windows NT.  This was considered the ultimate software at the time… Read more

Some thoughts on learning CG...

With my younger brother and nephew both currently in their first years of school for Animation Media Arts at two different Art Institutes, it made me reflect on my learning experience.  I realized that since I started learning 3D in 1998, I haven’t stopped.  I always thought that one day I would be able to catch up and know every aspect of at least one 3D application completely and then just review new features when they come out.  Turns out that was pretty naive and wishful thinking.  Read more

Background Noise

Oftentimes when working on a job we’ll realize that what we’re working on would also be a pretty cool desktop image. So of course we go ahead and render out a frame for that purpose. A bit self-indulgent I guess, but it is still better than that default Windows hill picture with the yellow flowers. Mac users still have better default options, but I am not declaring I am a Mac or I'm a PC anytime soon. Anyhoo, here are three of those we've done in the past that we think people may like.
